Mental Skills Snowsports Coaching Pathway
​
Purpose:
The purpose of the PSIE Mental Skills Snowsports Coaching Pathway (MSSCP) is to equip instructors/coaches/mountain guides (ICGs) with practical tools – grounded in the science of sports psychology and positive psychology – that they can use with their students to manage their psychological needs and enhance their overall experience so that it contributes to their mental health and wellbeing.

Pathway Structure:
The MSSCP is comprised of two levels:

Mental Skills Snowsports Coach
Mental Skills Snowsports Coaching Endorsement
Key features:
-
An online (face to face) foundation training course in mental skills
-
For existing snow sports instructors (Instructors, Coaches, & Mountain Guides).

Build on and add value to your existing knowledge and skills.
-
Excellent continued professional development (CPD).
-
Certificate of completion issued to all participants.
What you'll learn:

The interplay of mindset, attitude, and motivation

Different types of self-talk
-
Key aspects of mindfulness
-
How to put mindfulness into action in the snow sports environment

Different types of imagery for performance improvement

How to control the controllable
-
What flow state is and how it occurs

Foundations and characteristics of flow

2-hours pre-course study
-
2 x 2 hours online interactive Zoom sessions

Entry criteria:

Hold a recognised snow sports instructor/coach/mountain guide qualification (more info in detailed program summary)

Become a member of the PSIE (PSIC members do not need to join the PSIE)

Mental Skills Snowsports Coach

Builds on the MSSCE by putting foundational knowledge into action through practical tools that can be used on-snow in the snow sports environment.

For existing snow sports instructors (Instructors, Coaches, & Mountain Guides).

Will show you how you can easily incorporate mental skills training tools into your normal snow sports coaching practice.

Successful participants will be awarded the Mental Skills Snowsports Coach certification.

How to use motivational and instructional self-talk to develop performance

How to increase the likelihood of skiing in flow

Hold a recognised snow sports instructor/coach/mountain guide qualification (minimum Level 2 - more info in detailed program summary)

Have completed the Mental Skills Snowsports Coaching Endorsement or be give Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL)

Become a member of the PSIE (PSIC members do not need to join the PSIE)

FAQs
​
1) What if I already have ​experience/qualification in sports psychology?
​
If you already have studied sports psychology you can apply for an exemption from the Mental Skills Snowsports Coaching Endorsement (MSSCE) and move straight to the Mental Skills Snowsports Coach (MSSC) course. However, you will still benefit from taking the MSSCE as it sets you up for the two days on snow.
​
2) Can instructors from any snow sports discipline attend these courses?
​
Yes instructors from any discipline can attend these courses and the on snow course can have a mixture of skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers.
​
3) Will I receive a certificate for these courses?
​
Yes. For the MSSCE a certification of completion is issued. And for the MSSC a Mental Skills Snowsports Coach certificate is awarded to successful participants.

4) Is it possible for these course to be run for ski schools as part of thier in-house training?
​
Yes, please contact us via email if you have a group that would be interested in this training and certification.

Course Leader:
Derek Tate
Bio:
With 40 years teaching skiing professionally combined with a love of psychology to aid learning, performance and mental health Derek recognises the value of, and the need for, formal training in psychology for snow sports professionals. He has authored two books; Learn, Enjoy, Flow & Grow (2020), and Six Steps for Training the Mind (2022) and regularly presents at conferences about positive psychology and flow.
