At the heart of the leadership team is a genuine love of skiing, including all aspects of the sport – doing it, learning it, teaching it. But it's not just about passion. We're a curious and hard working bunch, with mountains of experience and extensive industry knowledge and relationships. Our diverse collective experience – spanning decades in education development, teaching, scientific study, and executive resort leadership – positions us at the forefront of ski professional training and development. Each member brings their own story, expertise, and dedication to the sport.

derek tate

Derek has been teaching skiing for over 35 years and during that time has worked with all ages and abilities from beginner, to advanced recreational skiers, instructors and competitive athletes.

 

In 1992/93 he completed a post graduate diploma in sports coaching which included a strong sports psychology component. In 2019 he graduated, with distinction, from the Masters in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from Buckinghamshire New University and since then has continued incorporating psychology into all of his coaching (life, business, leadership, sport etc.) combined with his passion for the outdoors and being in the mountains. 

Derek has always been passionate about training and examining ski instructors and has not only worked as a trainer and examiner but has been heavily involved in the writing and creation of resources and development of certification pathways. He has also attended five Interski Congresses representing Ireland.

jamie kagan

Jamie's ski instructing career began in 2003 in Banff, and then Silverstar BC, where he earned his Level 4 certification. His expertise spans globally, including certifications with BASI, IASI, Swiss Brevet Federal, and the Euro Ski Pro.

 

Recent experience includes being Head of Education for IASI and he represented Ireland at Interski 2019 in Pamporovo, Bulgaria and Interski 2023 in Levi, Finland where he was both demo team coach and technical demonstrator.

 

He is co-founder of Sommet et Neige SARL in Haute Nendaz, Switzerland. This ski school and instructor training center focuses on excellence in training and global instructor placement. Jamie is excited to reunite with mentors from Canada in this new journey.

mark sedgwick

Mark is a proud product of the ski industry – skiing is his passion, and he is an obsessed student of the sport. His career spans over 35 years in the industry. He is currently President and co-founder of both the Professional Ski Instructors of Canada (PSIC) and 2XO Ski Consulting, offering his expertise as an industry advisor. He is a recognized and respected global thought leader and author in the ski space.


Mark spent 16 years as a senior executive with Whistler Blackcomb and played a strategic role in all aspects of the resort’s journey and growth as it became the most visited resort on the planet. During his tenure at Whistler Blackcomb, he was involved in the delivery of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, a successful Initial Public Offering (IPO), leading to the establishment of Whistler Blackcomb as a publicly traded company. This series of achievements culminated in its significant acquisition by Vail Resorts.

Mark's ski education spans three pathways: Austrian, Australian, and Canadian. Mark participated at two Interski events, representing Australia in 1995 and Canada as Technical Lead and Coach in 2023.

jamie jack

Jamie has been heavily involved in the ski industry for over two decades and has worked as a Level 4 ski instructor & examiner, a race coach, a ski tester, and more since moving to Canada from Scotland. Jamie has worked from east to west in Canada spending 6 years at Mont Tremblant before moving west to Big White for 3 years, Sun Peaks for 6 years and Whistler Blackcomb for 3 years. Most recently, Jamie was the Ontario Education Program Coordinator (EPC) for the CSIA. He has significant global ski experience with IASI (Irish) Level 4 designation, PSIA (USA) Level 3 designation, and as an International Trainer for the Rookie Academy in New Zealand.  Jamie was also a member of the 2023 Canadian Interski Team.

jeff marks

More about Jeff

Jeff has held various roles in the ski industry since beginning his ski teaching career as a teenager at Marmot Basin near Jasper, Alberta. Moving to Banff in 1997, Jeff spent 10 years with the Club Ski Program, the last few years of that tenure in the role of Snow School Director.  In 2007, a unique opportunity to build a new snow school approach at Niseko Village in Japan took him there for the next four years.  As a Director with the resort, Jeff’s oversight went beyond Snow School to include winter & summer in-resort activities. 

Since returning to Canada in 2011, Jeff has been a staff member of the CSIA, including serving as National Program Director since 2019.  Jeff has represented Canada as a member of the 2015 and 2019 Interski teams and most recently, Head Coach of the 2023 Interski Team.

Stefania currently works as a ski instructor for Sommet et Neige in Nendaz 4 Vallees. She represented Ireland at Interski 2023 in Levi, Finland as a technical demonstrator and is a trainer and examiner of ski instructors.
